Golf experience

This par 72 18-hole golf course, with a varied and balanced layout, is enjoyable and challenging for players of all abilities.

The fourth hole, 619 metres in length, is the longest hole in Spain and one of the longest in the world. It is also very flat, with a slight dog-leg on the left.

Its main challenge lies in its length and in the two bunkers which are strategically located in front of the green, making the first shot even more challenging.

Logroño and the culture of ‘Rioja’ wine

The capital of La Rioja is defined largely through its relationship to wine. The building of underground wine cellars under the houses forming the city, and which today mark the old town’s boundaries, was already common practice by the 16th century. In those days the families of Logroño were already making wine for their own consumption. The wine industry has played a key role in the development of present day Logroño.

what is a ‘calado’?
The calados, underground wine cellars, which were built with blocks of stone cut by stone masons, were ideal for keeping a constant temperature – a factor which greatly favours the wine-making process.

St gregory’s cellar
(Calle Ruavieja 29)
Built with blocks of stone in the 16th century, this amazing 30m long cellar is a true gem in the history of wine-architecture and an extraordinary example of a traditional underground cellar. Its restoration has allowed us to learn more about how wine was made and stored in that century, with hardly any equipment and exploiting the favourable conditions provided by the city’s subsoil. Another feature that makes this cellar unique is its 7-metre deep well.

Other underground cellars
Eight have remained intact until the present day and are open to visitors:
La Reja Dorada: between Mercaderes and Ruavieja st.
Casa de la Danza: Ruavieja, 25 – entrance in San Gregorio.
Colegio de Arquitectos: Barriocepo st., 40
UNED: Barriocepo st., 34
Colegio de Ingenieros: Plaza Amós Salvador
CCR: Mercaderes st.
Electra Gran Casino: Sagasta st., 10
Centro El Calado: Ruavieja st.

The first ‘rioja’ wines of the modern era
It was in one of these ancient calados, La Reja Dorada, that the first modern Riojan wines were developed and elaborated through a wine-ageing process by Luciano Murrieta and Baldomero Espartero who, through their persistency and experimentation, created the ‘Rioja’ we know today. Their successful wine-making activities brought about, not only the expansion of Logroño’s wineries, but also the growth of the city itself.

Did you know that…?
In the late 16th century the local authorities established regulations to prohibit the passage of cart-traffic through the streets with underground cellars, because the wheels’ vibrations adversely affected the quality of the wine.

Wine vats, grape presses and storage tanks
A stroll through the Old Town of Logroño enables the visitor to discover traces of its wine-related past and to see some of the ancient wine vats, grape presses and storage tanks, for example, the extraordinary collection on the ground floor of Espacio Lagares.

COCa RIOJA official control board
El Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja, which is located in the area of Cascajos, is the Official Board that controls the quality of Riojan wines. It controls the production and quality of grapes and the winemaking process, so that wines meet the required ‘Rioja’ standards. The first document relating to the protection of the guaranteed quality of Riojan wines dates from 1650, but it was in 1926 that El Consejo was created.

Wineries that encircle the city

Growth of the wineries continued in line with the growth of the city itself, which eventually made it necessary to move them to the outskirts of the city. Today you can visit the seven local wineries within the DOCa Rioja which encircle the city.
